Over the span of our lives, each of us will thoughtlessly spend countless hours and dollars watching, admiring, and marvelling at other people’s accomplishments and capabilities. While we are doing that, we are ignoring, dismissing or downplaying our own capabilities, not realizing that what we see in others we, in our own unique way have the same innate ability to achieve.
As I grow to be a man, I’m finding the daily effort it takes to go slowly, giving myself permission to examine, articulate and define who I am, who I want to be and where I want to go, is immense. I am coming to learn more and more every day how much of our lives are invisible to us, mine included.
Without giving any thought or consideration to these questions, we allow the world around us, like many generations before, to continually and constantly push us forward toward an uncertain future which we can only hope will be an improvement to where we are today.
We will do this without giving ourselves any time to think, reflect or question – why am I here? what is my purpose? and, who will I serve?
We, in our haste blindly pursue what we’ve been told or have simply accepted. This is not something new or unique. You will find it in the writings of the greatest minds our history has to offer. They are littered with similar unheeded observations.
It has taken me 76 years to get to the point where I’m now prepared to take the time to examine and ask these questions. Like most of us, I chased after my dreams and visions thinking that if I achieved them they would somehow magically give me the answers to these questions, thereby solving many, if not all of the problems in my life.
What a rookie – I was wrong; they never did solve my problems, nor will they ever. Whether I succeeded, failed or went sideways, it made no difference. I was still the same person on the other end, same weaknesses, anxieties and attitudes – you get the picture.
It’s only lately I’ve learned to accept and understand I am where I’m supposed to be, and it doesn’t matter whether I agree with it or not or even understand why, I am where I am, that’s it!
My only responsibility is to learn! Learn the lessons; why am I here, what actions of mine brought me to this place and how do I purposely move forward? Only through this step do I give myself the chance to bring the answers that up to now have been invisible to me in the light of day.
I have throughout my life been incredibly fortunate. Why I can’t honestly say, but I do remember my late mother telling me as a young boy I had a guardian angel watching over me. It seemed I’d avoided some potentially fatal situations in my early years. Yet as I grew into adulthood there have been times I’ve felt guided by a force or power beyond my understanding, some people refer to as the force of the universe but I simply use the name God.
When allowed, this force has lifted me up when I felt hopeless, and guided me through periods of success when I thought I had the world by the tail and could do no wrong. As well, it has seen me through a heart attack and a stroke, bringing me to where I am today.
Where am I today? Healthier than I’ve ever been; more committed than ever to living a life of purpose on purpose, happy, and having all the energy in my life I need, all while being a little older and wiser.
The way I look at it, I’m just getting started; there, is so much more of life to be lived, so much to be learned, so much more to achieve, and much, much more to give.
I don’t believe I have truly defined my purpose as of yet, nor do I understand who I am to serve. For now though I’ve made a goal to learn as much as I can about this man Lorne Davidson; his abilities and what he has to share with the world. As mentioned earlier, he has without much thought, spent valuable time and money watching and marveling at the capabilities of others yet was never willing to recognize his own.
So I’ve made it a mission to decode the man I’ve lived with all my life, yet up to now I don’t know a great deal about him, because, for the most part, he’s remained invisible.
